An additional 20 developments were awarded tax-exempt bonds that will total 3,439 units. Legislative Updates

No Votes Expected at General Assembly, WHLP Still Missing from Budgets
Legislators reconvene in Raleigh today for a planned 3-day session. However no votes are expected this week. They will convene again in September, where we hope they continue to work on the state budget or another mini-budget that can serve as a vehicle to restore the Workforce Housing Loan Program (WHLP) funding to ensure that projects a part of next year’s cycle in NC have the gap financing they need. This year, every new construction project and all but one rehab project, demonstrated the need for gap financing. Without this funding, projects will likely be limited or not feasible in rural areas of our state, including those recovering from Hurricane Helene and in need of additional housing stock.

Disaster Recovery

Governor Stein Highlights Lack of Federal Aid for Disaster Recovery
Last week during a press conference – Governor Josh Stein addressed the ratio of federal aid received so far compared to federal support for past storms. Governor Stein stated that currently,  North Carolina has received about 8% of the total damages assessed, which was about $60B worth of damages. This includes all types of federal funding from FEMA to the Small Business Administration. He continued to say that in the past the state has received upwards of 70% of the overall damage from the federal government, so there is much work to be done in order to get the funding needed to support the recovery work that is necessary for Western North Carolina.
