In 2008, the Coalition successfully passed legislation that changed the tax valuation process for Low Income Housing Tax Credit properties. This saves the tax-credit industry over $20 million dollars a year. Many of these properties have been able to stabilize tenants’ rents and make improvements to their developments because of these savings.
With the economic downfall, however, this legislation was in danger and we needed to provide a strong, cohesive voice in the legislature to ensure that this policy remained in tact. In 2009, we created the Developers Council, bringing together all the stakeholders in tax-credit development. With their assistance, our policy coordinator and a contracted lobbyist have successfully protected the legislation two years in row.
As the Coalition continues to grow, our solid relationship with developers has proven to be one of our greatest assets in advocating for housing policy.
