The ceremony began with a warm welcome and opening remarks from EMPOWERment Inc. Board President Linda Bynum, who emphasized that the day was not only a celebration of new housing, but a deeper celebration of community—coming together to honor the collective effort it took to make this vision a reality. A heartfelt letter from North Carolina Governor Josh Stein was read by Judge Joal Broun, underscoring the significance of this moment not just for Chapel Hill, but for the entire state’s efforts to combat housing insecurity.

Dignitaries and advocates from all levels of government and the community shared reflections, including Chapel Hill Mayor Jessica Anderson, Orange County Board of Commissioners Chair Jamezetta Bedford, and former Congressman David Price. Each praised EMPOWERment Inc.’s vision and the collaborative spirit that made the P.E.A.C.H. Apartments possible.

The ceremony was filled with moments of inspiration and reflection, including a moving poem from EMPOWERment Board Treasurer Dave Bright, a soulful song performed by Yvette Matthews of the Community Empowerment Fund, and a powerful benediction from Apostle Hattie B. Stancil of Barbee’s Chapel Harvest Word Ministries.
Congresswoman Valerie Foushee offered stirring remarks, affirming the critical importance of affordable housing in sustaining vibrant, inclusive communities. Her presence was a reminder that the P.E.A.C.H. Apartments are not just a place to live—they are a symbol of hope, resilience, and equity.

The ceremony concluded with heartfelt closing remarks and expressions of gratitude from EMPOWERment Inc. Executive Director Delores Bailey. With warmth and sincerity, she thanked the many partners, donors, advocates, community members, and dedicated staff whose support brought the P.E.A.C.H. Apartments to life.

Designed to be ADA-compliant, universally accessible, and multigenerational, the P.E.A.C.H. Apartments include a mix of studios, one-, two-, and three-bedroom units for individuals and families earning 30% of the area median income. The development also features sustainable elements such as solar power and insulated walls. Funded through donations and government partnerships, the $3.9 million project serves as a model for future affordable housing efforts and represents a milestone in building a more equitable and inclusive community.

As the ribbon was cut, it marked not just the opening of a building, but the opening of new opportunities for essential workers, seniors, and families to live and thrive in the communities they serve.

EMPOWERment Inc. continues to lead with compassion, vision, and action—and the P.E.A.C.H. Apartments stand as a testament to what is possible when community comes together.
