The Association of Housing Counselors has provided training to more than 1,000 people over the last ten years. Prior to the implementation of HUD’s housing counseling certification process, TAHC was the only organization in North Carolina and South Carolina that certified housing counselors. National and State agencies recognized us as an organization committed to ensuring that housing counselors were professionally trained.

While TAHC no longer certifies housing counselors, the association continues to provide a variety of trainings and networking opportunities for housing counselors in North and South Carolina.

Housing counselors provide a wide array of housing and economic services including:

  • Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) programs
  • Fair Housing
  • Financial Literacy/Fitness
  • Homebuyer Education
  • Home Equity Conversion Mortgage Counseling (Reverse Mortgage Counseling)
  • Individual Development Accounts (IDA) programs
  • Loss Mitigation
  • Mobility and Relocation
  • Money Debt Management
  • Mortgage Delinquency and Default
  • Post-purchase Counseling
  • Predatory Lending
  • Pre-purchase Counseling
  • Renters Assistance
  • Services for Homeless

Housing counselors play an important part of the asset building process. Studies indicate that informed consumers are less likely to get into a predatory situation and make better choices having received face-to-face information. Housing counselors go beyond instruction on how to buy a home. They also assist consumers/clients/customers who have financial difficulties and need professional help to protect their hard-earned investments.
